Electronics

I guess most folk would think of me as a computer person, and indeed, my first contact with computers was at school in the mid 1960s where I was taught to program in Algol. My first job was with Marconi Elliot in Boreham Wood where I was taught to program in Fortran 2. But actually, my first love was electronics.

[Philips Kit]

I suspect it was probably down to my mother, who was a qualified Radiographer. I was maybe twelve years old when I was given a Philips "Electronic Engineer" kit which I loved. I reckon I must have built every circuit in the book, and I read the notes carefully. It was a brilliant kit - when I went to university and studied electronic engineering, I found I didn't need to unlearn anything - Phillips had taught me well through their kit!

Whilst my career focused on computing in its various guises, I have never left the electronics behind. Indeed, the Haven Consulting company that I still keep going was basically started as a vehicle to enable me to produce elecronic goods for the classroom.

It is my plan that this page will at some stage become a teaching resource covering the fundamentals of electronics. I used to teach electronics at university and have a well-developed plan and strategy for how the subject may be delivered. But for now, any electronics has to be via YouTube .
