Biography

David has had a long and varied career which has never strayed too far away from electronics and computing. He is primarily interested in online security, and in particular, security issues relating to eLearning. Strong authentication is one aspect of this; also the concept of "presence", the protection of personal data, and ensuring the validity of the results of online examinations taken in remote locations.

Beginning work at Marconi-Elliott Computer Systems Ltd a number of years ago, David then went off to university to study electronic engineering. He qualified as a teacher, and taught in both primary and secondary schools before moving to the University of Winchester as a lecturer in Computing. Whilst there, he planned and formed their "Computer Education Centre", set up and ran the "South and West Acorn Group" for a number of years, and was involved in the establishment of the goverment's national Microelectronics Education Primary Project (MEP) on the premises. He created "Haven Consulting" at this time as a spin-out venture, dealing in hardware and software product design and manufacture, and with a particular emphasis on secure software protection. David remains as MD of the company.

When not publishing his latest research, David has also found time to gain significant course development experience, having developed various computing degrees in several different institutions. He was recruited to the University of Southampton to help establish their widening participation venture which ran successfully, and then joined the main operation of the University to develop a new initiative in IT security. This now recruits heavily each year, and leads to a steady stream of project and PhD students entering the field. His great joy is to see the next generation of researchers gaining themselves a reputation in their chosen field.

By way of relaxation, David can be found donning a kilt and joining his wife in Scottish Country Dancing; or hitching up the caravan and going off to explore the world; or enjoying his 25 year old Eunos Roadster; or sailing his classic Minisail racing dinghy. Amongst other things...

Roles

Over the years, David has taken on a number of roles:

Research Development: a new research focus created in IT Security, which has been seen through to the establishment of a growing research community.
External Roles: External Examiner and External Consultant for a number of universities, such as Leeds, Bath and Johannesburg; invited keynote speaker.
Entrepreneur: although viewed as a sideline, Haven Consulting has never made a loss, which seems to place it in an elite group! It has also taught many lessons about working in the real world.
Course Development: lead developer for a number of successful university degrees, including part-time and widening participation degrees.
Course Management: having developed a variety of degrees, these have then been managed to ensure their ongoing success.
Staff Management: various management roles in several universities, including Head of Division, responsible for several subject areas.
Committee Work: full involvement in the running of the institutions worked with.
